Choosing the Right Shampoo and Conditioner
It takes trial and error to discover which shampoos and conditioners agree with your type of hair. There are products that cause a lot of flaking, oiliness, dryness, brittleness or flatness to the appearance of the hair. We should always remember that our hair is our crowning glory and therefore we need to find the suitable products by interchanging shampoos at least once a month to find the right one. The same goes with picking out the perfect conditioner.
Shampoos and conditioners should be applied on the hair on a regular basis, although those who have treated hair are only required to shampoo once or twice a week whilst religiously using conditioners to prevent damages in the future.
The main role of shampoos is to strip away excess oils and dirt from the hair, while conditioners ensure softness and restoration of the hair’s natural moisture. Without conditioners, hair becomes susceptible to dryness and split ends; and without shampoos, buildups may occur.
With the number of hair care products available in the market that it could be a bit overwhelming to choose which ones would work for you. The effects of shampoo and conditioner basically vary from one hair type to the other. A particular brand may work wonders with another person’s hair but may not work well for you.
Below is a list of hair tips that you may follow in accordance to your respective hair type:
1. For curly and coarse hair (it is a fact that curly hair is prone to getting dry and tangled because the natural oils produced by the scalp are unable to travel all the way to the tip)
THE PERFECT SHAMPOO: Choose a brand of shampoo that is creamy and moisturizing. Find something that contains oils which were extracted from nuts, wheat germ oil, and shea butter. These help in coating the base of the hair making sure that moisture and water are locked inside.
THE PERFECT CONDITIONER: Purchase a brand that focuses on intense moisturizing. Also, make it a point to use conditioner after every time you wash your hair with shampoo. Deep conditioning every 2 weeks and going to the salon for hot oil treatment once a month are the main keys to maintaining the luxuriousness of your precious locks.
2. For limp, oily, or fine hair (Limp hair lacks volume because of the buildup of oils.)
THE PERFECT SHAMPOO: Stick to clear shampoo instead of the creamy ones. The last thing you need is to add more oil to your head. Also, make it a habit to shampoo your hair every single day to get rid of excess oils that you don’t need. Choose something that has panthenol since it has the ability to make every single strand of your hair thicker whilst preventing further oil buildup.
THE PERFECT CONDITIONER: Most conditioners provide extra moisture for the hair. If you think you can do without this given the current conditioner of your hair, you may skip this step.
3. For treated hair (it is important to nourish treated hair – specifically color treated, permed, or relaxed – because the solutions that were used have the ability to strip the hair’s natural moisture thereby making it dull and dry)
THE PERFECT SHAMPOO: Purchase a shampoo that is specially formulated for treated hair as these aim to cleanse each strand whilst nourishing the ends.
THE PERFECT CONDITIONER: Opt for a creamy and rich conditioner. If your hair is color treated, avoid conditioners that contain silicone as these wash away artificial hair colors.
4. For dry and damaged hair (the obvious signs of damaged hair are split ends, appearance of dandruff, dryness, and brittleness)
THE PERFECT SHAMPOO: Thick and creamy moisturizing shampoos are the best options for those who have dry and damaged hair. These help in detangling and smoothing out the hair.
THE PERFECT CONDITIONER: It is apparent that anything that’s dry needs moisture, thus, the use of extra nourishing and moisturizing conditioners is the key.
